Deputy President Gachagua Addresses Graduates: Limited Job Opportunities, Emphasis on Housing Fund

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua delivered a candid message to university graduates, cautioning them that the government cannot provide widespread employment opportunities. Speaking at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology's graduation ceremony, Gachagua emphasized that graduates would benefit from the Housing Fund, which aims to create jobs and economic opportunities.

In his address, Gachagua maintained honesty and transparency, stating, "I don't want to sit here and lie to you that we have jobs for you. These jobs we are going to create together with you." He highlighted the significance of the recently passed Finance Bill for 2023, which focuses on establishing the Housing Fund. As a University of Science and Technology, Gachagua emphasized the potential of graduates to contribute to the housing sector.

Through the Housing Fund initiative, the Deputy President explained that the government plans to construct 200,000 houses annually. This endeavor would create employment opportunities for professionals in architecture, building engineering, electrical work, plumbing, and related fields, particularly benefiting graduates from Jomo Kenyatta University.

Gachagua acknowledged that while some graduates may not find immediate employment through the Housing Fund, they should consider pursuing entrepreneurial ventures. He encouraged them to adopt a positive mindset and highlighted the strengths they possess, such as analytical thinking, strong communication skills, and the ability to be creative and innovative.

The Deputy President also acknowledged the efforts of the graduates' parents, pointing out that many of them had not been employed but had worked diligently and resourcefully to support their children's university education. Gachagua expressed confidence in the graduates, affirming that they were ten times better equipped than their parents and had the potential to succeed in various fields.

While acknowledging the challenges posed by unemployment and the high cost of living in the country, Gachagua assured the graduates that the employment landscape is not entirely bleak. He advised them to exercise patience and tenacity, emphasizing that success would come with time and perseverance.

President William Ruto echoed Gachagua's sentiments, reassuring Kenyans that the government is committed to creating job opportunities through the Housing Fund. This assurance aimed to alleviate concerns about the scarcity of employment opportunities and provide hope for a brighter future.
