A day of solemn pride and cultural symbolism unfolded in Bondo on Thursday as Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka arrived at Opoda Farm to pay his final respects to the late opposition leader Raila Amollo Odinga.

Kalonzo, a long-time ally and political partner of Odinga, led his delegation in a striking display of unity and reverence. Dressed in jungle green attire and carrying a spear and shield, he entered the Odinga homestead to the rhythmic chant of “Jowi! Jowi!” — a traditional Luo expression reserved for honouring great warriors and leaders.

A Moment of Symbolic Mourning

The procession, rich in cultural expression, was both a tribute and a declaration of solidarity. As Kalonzo stepped into the compound, his entourage joined local mourners in paying homage to a man widely regarded as one of Kenya’s most influential political figures.

Witnesses described the atmosphere as “electric yet deeply respectful,” with songs of remembrance filling the air as the crowd cheered the arrival of the delegation.

A Political Ally’s Tribute

Kalonzo, who shared decades of political struggle alongside Raila — from the push for multiparty democracy to the fight for constitutional reform — has been among the most vocal figures in mourning the late ODM leader.

In recent days, he has called Odinga’s death “a national wound that will take time to heal,” urging Kenyans to celebrate his legacy of courage and sacrifice.

Unity in Grief

The visit to Opoda Farm, now a focal point of national mourning, comes as leaders from across Kenya continue to stream to Bondo to condole with the Odinga family.

Earlier in the week, delegations from both sides of the political divide made similar pilgrimages, underscoring Raila Odinga’s broad influence and the respect he commanded even among rivals.

As Kalonzo stood by the graveside, he bowed his head quietly — a symbolic moment of farewell to a man who, for decades, defined the contours of Kenya’s political opposition.
