Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu made a significant announcement today, April 29, declaring a delay in the reopening of schools until May 6. This decision comes as a response to the extensive flooding wreaking havoc across the nation.

The Ministry of Education's move to postpone the reopening dates was prompted by alarming reports detailing the widespread damage inflicted upon schools by the relentless downpour. Machogu underscored the gravity of the situation, emphasizing the need to prioritize the safety of students and staff amidst the ongoing crisis.

"In light of the continuous heavy rainfall, the Ministry of Education has taken proactive steps, directing its field officers to gather comprehensive data from all Basic Education Learning Institutions nationwide," Machogu stated. "This data will aid the government in assessing the preparedness of schools for the commencement of the Second Term on Monday, April 29, 2024."

According to Machogu, the received reports, combined with data from relevant government agencies, paint a troubling picture of the widespread impact of the floods on schools across various regions.

"In consideration of the current flood conditions, it would be reckless to endanger the lives of learners and educators without implementing robust safety measures," Machogu added.

Acknowledging the severity of the situation, Machogu assured the public of the Ministry's concerted efforts to collaborate with pertinent agencies and stakeholders to mitigate the adverse effects of the floods on the education sector. Regular updates on developments will be provided as the situation evolves.

The decision to postpone reopening coincides with the disruption of major transportation routes due to flooding. Moreover, the displacement of nearly 20,000 households in Nairobi and beyond has rendered it impossible for schoolchildren to commute to their respective institutions.

While the tertiary academic calendar remains unaffected, with universities scheduled for a prolonged break until September 2024, the government has issued a stern warning against attempting to traverse flooded areas to prevent tragic incidents, such as the recent loss of a school bus in Samburu on April 28.
