Former aide to Raila Odinga, Silas Jakakimba, has publicly disclosed the circumstances leading to his departure from the ODM party and his subsequent alignment with the ruling UDA party led by Deputy President William Ruto.
Jakakimba attributed his decision to join UDA to what he perceived as greater opportunities and privileges within the Kenya Kwanza movement.
Having served Raila Odinga for 19 years, Jakakimba aired grievances regarding his tenure within the opposition, alleging interference from senior officials within ODM as a catalyst for his departure.
Speaking during an interview on Ramogi TV, Jakakimba lamented the lack of space for young politicians to thrive within ODM, claiming that the party hindered the growth and progression of emerging leaders.
The lawyer recounted instances where he encountered obstacles while vying for elective positions under the ODM ticket, including the 2015 Homa Bay senatorial by-election and the 2017 Suba North parliamentary seat contest.
Jakakimba criticized ODM's internal party structure, citing flaws in the selection process for party candidates and the handling of party primaries.
Expressing disillusionment with ODM's leadership, Jakakimba emphasized the need for change within the party, calling for the elevation of younger voices and the dissolution of what he deemed as ineffective leadership.
Highlighting his aspirations to represent youth interests in regional legislative bodies, Jakakimba recounted instances where promises made to him within ODM were unfulfilled, further fueling his disillusionment with the party.
In a bid to carve out a political path aligned with his convictions, Jakakimba opted to join UDA, viewing it as a platform offering greater inclusivity and opportunities for emerging leaders.
Asserting his commitment to contest the Suba South parliamentary seat under the UDA banner, Jakakimba urged younger politicians within ODM to consider forming their own political parties to foster a more conducive environment for their growth and development.
As he embarks on this new political journey, Jakakimba disclosed plans to document his experiences and association with Raila Odinga in an upcoming book, shedding light on his tenure as a close aide to the former Prime Minister.
