President William Ruto has reiterated his unwavering commitment to using taxation as a primary means of driving Kenya's development while reducing dependency on borrowing.

Speaking to Kenyans residing in Japan during an address in Tokyo on Wednesday, Ruto emphasized that Kenya's progress hinges on its own revenue and taxes, rather than external aid or debt.

"The development of our country relies on us rolling up our sleeves. We won't rely on others, aid, or debt to build our nation. Japan was built by the Japanese using their taxes. Similarly, Kenya will be built by Kenyans through our revenue and taxes," affirmed the president to the diaspora community in East Asia.

Since assuming office in September 2022, Ruto has implemented various taxes and increased existing ones, drawing criticism from Kenyans who accuse him of deviating from his election pledges.

Ruto initially garnered support by championing the welfare of ordinary struggling Kenyans, whom he referred to as 'hustlers'.

Addressing concerns about the utilization of tax revenues, Ruto assured Kenyans abroad that his administration is committed to ensuring transparency and accountability in tax management.

"I have personally pledged to guarantee that every Kenyan who pays taxes will see their money put to good use. As long as we utilize the taxes collected to foster our country's growth, we will all reap the benefits in due time," he assured.

Despite facing criticism and being likened to the biblical figure Zacchaeus, known as a greedy tax collector, Ruto remains resolute in his stance. He affirmed that he is determined to do what he believes is right for Kenya, regardless of the names he is called.

"I am focused on doing what's right for our nation. I won't promise free lunches or rely on borrowing to develop our country. I'm prepared to face any criticism, including being called names like Zakayo," asserted Ruto.

Acknowledging that the taxes may cause discomfort, Ruto emphasized their necessity, stating that the sacrifices being made are in line with the ideals of Kenya's freedom fighters.
