Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing'oei issued a stern warning on Thursday, cautioning governors and politicians against meddling in Kenya's international relations. Sing'Oei, serving under Cabinet Secretary and Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi, clarified that Kenya had not taken any steps to sever ties with Israel, countering the advocacy of Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o for such a move.
In an official statement, Sing'oei asserted that Kenya would continue to advocate for an immediate ceasefire and the resumption of dialogue between Israel and the Palestinian militia, Hamas, to address the escalating conflict.
"Foreign policy falls within the exclusive domain of the National Government. Kenya condemns the gross violation of international humanitarian law in Gaza," Sing'oei emphasized, urging all government authorities to adhere to their designated jurisdictions.
Governor Anyang' Nyong'o had appealed to the African Union to instruct member countries to sever diplomatic relations with Israel. Nyong'o argued that cutting ties with Israel would demonstrate the African Union's solidarity with the people of Gaza and the West Bank.
"The conflict between Israel and Palestine has far-reaching consequences worldwide. Progressive forces in Africa, led by the African Union, cannot stand idly by and allow this to happen," Nyong'o remarked.
In October, President William Ruto expressed Kenya's support for Israel, diverging from other continental leaders who either supported Palestine or maintained a neutral stance. Ruto condemned the Hamas group's attack on Israel and expressed Kenya's sympathy for all victims.
However, last week, President Ruto shifted his position, stating that Palestine should be a free state.
"We believe that terrorism is not a solution to any conflict, nor is occupation. We advocate for a two-nation solution as a means of resolving the conflict, with Palestine as a free state," the President declared.
The ongoing war between Israel and Palestine has resulted in a significant loss of life, prompting calls from the international community for a peaceful resolution.
