President Ruto's Lawyer, Karim Khan, to Receive Honorary Doctorate from Mount Kenya University

Mount Kenya University has announced its decision to award an honorary doctorate to Karim Khan, President William Ruto's lawyer, during its upcoming 23rd graduation ceremony set for August 4, 2023.

In a public notice, the university revealed that it had nominated the renowned British barrister for the Honorary Doctor of Law (Honoris Causa) in recognition of his significant contributions to the rule of law and international justice.

The conferment acknowledges Khan's impressive accomplishments, which include his expertise as an international criminal law and human rights lawyer, his commitment to community outreach initiatives that support social emancipation through education, his role in combating terrorism, as well as his extensive research and publications, along with other notable appointments and awards.

Karim Khan assumed the position of International Criminal Court (ICC) Prosecutor in June 2021, succeeding Fatou Bensouda. Notably, he represented President Ruto during the post-election violence case at The Hague in 2017. At the time, both the then Deputy President Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta were sued at the ICC court in connection with the post-election violence in Kenya. The ICC eventually dismissed the case against President Ruto due to insufficient evidence.

Khan's legal expertise extends beyond his work with President Ruto, as he has also represented Saif Al Islam, the son of Libyan former leader Muammar Gaddafi.

With over 30 years of experience as a barrister and a King's Counsel since 2011, Karim Khan is a Bencher of Lincoln Inn and was appointed a Recorder of the Crown Court in 2018. Additionally, he previously served as an Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations as the first Special Adviser and Head of the United Nations Investigative team.

Mount Kenya University's decision to confer the Honorary Doctorate upon Karim Khan recognizes his remarkable career and dedication to the pursuit of justice, making him a respected figure in the legal community both nationally and internationally.
