Businesses are slowly reopening in Machakos town as residents wait for the election results.
Only a few traders have opened their shops while the counting of votes for gubernatorial seat is still ongoing in most parts of the county.
Some companies operating at the Athi River’s Export Processing Zone have, however, resumed operations with their workers reporting to work Wednesday morning after a four-day break due to the Tuesday General Election.
At the same time, tallying continues in most polling stations in Mavoko constituency.
Machakos county police commander Issa Mohammud said security has been beefed in the stations all over the constituency to ensure the exercise is peaceful and successful.
Mohammud said there were no security incidences experienced in the entire Machakos County during the voting exercise that started at 6am on Tuesday and ended at 5pm.
“The exercise was good and peaceful. Very orderly. It has gone well without any incidences or hitches,” Mohammud said.
Machakos county IEBC returning officer Nelly Illongo affirmed Mohammud’s sentiments stating that the counting was successful.
“The exercise was okay, there were neither hitches nor incidences. It was generally successful in the entire county,” Illongo said.
Both Mohammud and Illongo separately spoke to the Star on phone.
More than 3,000 police officers had been deployed to man the August 9 election in Machakos county.
Mohammud earlier said as the National Police Service, they are ready for the task.
“We are deploying the officers drawn from various units including GSU in all nine tallying centres in Machakos county.
“The centres include eight constituency tallying centres and one county tallying centre,” Mohammud said.
