Congolese superstar Fally Ipupa takes over Nairobi’s Uhuru Gardens on Saturday in one of the capital’s biggest African music concerts of the year.

The September 5 show brings together Congolese rumba, Kenyan live music and South African Amapiano for a 12-hour programme scheduled to run from 3pm on Saturday until 3am on Sunday.

Ipupa is already in Nairobi, having arrived ahead of the concert and promising fans a high-energy performance.

Fally is expected to deliver one of the longest performances of the evening. Citizen Digital reports that his set is scheduled to last about two hours and 45 minutes, although the precise stage time could still be affected by the running order.

The official event information advises ticket holders to arrive at least an hour early to allow time for entry.

South African producer and Amapiano heavyweight DJ Maphorisa and dancer-performer Kamo Mphela are among the biggest names on the supporting bill.

The line-up also includes Kodong Klan, Joe Mfalme, DJ Ice and Tango Supreme.

Kodong Klan — featuring Bensoul, Charisma, Coster Ojwang, Mordecai Dex, Okello Max, Onyach Pala and Ywaya Tajiri — says it will perform a full live-band set before Fally takes the stage.

TicketSasa's listing on Saturday shows last-minute Regular tickets at KSh6,000, Couple Regular at KSh11,000, VIP at KSh20,000, VIP Couple at KSh36,000 and VVIP at KSh30,000.

Those prices differ from earlier Wave 1 rates advertised before the concert, so fans purchasing today should check the live ticketing platform rather than relying on older posters circulating online.

The official concert site says VIP includes priority entry, a dedicated lounge and premium viewing, while VVIP includes additional benefits including a meet-and-greet opportunity.

The organisers say parking is available at Uhuru Gardens, with priority parking closer to the entrance for VIP and VVIP ticket holders.

Fans are advised to carry their QR-code ticket and valid photo identification matching the booking details. The organisers say tickets can be presented digitally or printed.

Why tonight's performance matters

There is another reason expectations are high.

Ipupa had been scheduled to perform at the Africa Forward concert at Kasarani in May but ultimately did not take the stage. Saturday's concert therefore gives Kenyan fans another opportunity to see the Congolese star perform this year.

For Nairobi, tonight's show is also another demonstration of the city's growing position on the touring circuit for major African artists.
