Mombasa-based artist Zablon Ndale has shared the intriguing backstory of his song "Mzabibu," currently making waves on the popular social media platforms TikTok and Instagram.
In a media interview held on Friday, Ndale expressed his delight at the unexpected resurgence of his song, nearly a decade after its initial release.
Translating segments of the song, which is written in the Mijikenda dialect, Ndale, who is also a pastor, revealed that he drew inspiration from the book of John in the Bible. The song metaphorically depicts Jesus as a vine tree and Christians as its branches.
"I was shocked, but I guess God’s timing is the best. Everyone from Christians to Muslims dancing to the song warms my heart," remarked Ndale.
The artist shared that the genesis of the song occurred during his preparation for a Sunday service, where he spontaneously picked up a pen and paper, crafting verses in his local dialect to create a rhythmic flow.
"As an artist, inspiration can come when you are resting in bed, taking a shower, or when taking a walk," he explained during the interview on Citizen TV.
Ndale discovered the song's newfound popularity when he stumbled upon numerous TikTok videos featuring people dancing to his music. Eager to connect with his audience, he took to TikTok to reveal that he was the creator of the song, prompting acquaintances to reach out.
While acknowledging the song's presence in clubs and entertainment joints, Ndale asserted that his primary goal was to share God's message with a diverse audience.
"I’m not shocked that the song is trending in clubs, as long as the message intended for God’s people gets to them, then I’m satisfied," he stated.
Addressing the unconventional dance moves associated with the song, Ndale expressed understanding, noting, "Some of the moves are not very pleasing, but I understand it's a trend, so it's okay."
From Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa to Charlene Ruto, Kenyans, including DJs who have created mash-ups and renditions, have embraced the song with enthusiasm.
