Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital, is now covered by Safaricom network, the telco has said.
The switch on came ahead of the official launch of the company's operations in the country in an event to be presided over by President William Ruto.
"Today's launch reiterates our commitment to contribute to Ethiopia’s digital transformation and inclusion agenda," Safaricom Kenya CEO Peter Ndegwa said.
He assured that the firm's board in Kenya is actively supporting the Ethiopian management to ensure that the telco sets up a strong foundation.
Ndegwa also acknowledged the milestones mentioned by Safaricom Ethiopia CEO Anwar Soussa, adding that the efforts will contribute to the country’s telecommunications reforms.
"We are encouraged that the milestones mentioned by Anwar Soussa, contribute to the country’s telecommunications reforms, digital transformation and inclusion objectives.
"These efforts and more would not have been possible without the support of the government of Ethiopia with whom we have worked together since the licensing and our preparations for this commercial launch."
President Ruto and his Ethiopian host, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed will preside over the launch of Safaricom commercial operations in Addis Ababa.
Ndegwa assured the Ethiopia branch of full support and guidance to ensure the promises are delivered.
"As the board and shareholders will offer the management our unwavering support, guidance, & continuous oversight to ensure we deliver on our promise to the people of Ethiopia to combine the power of technology & innovation to solve customer and societal challenges," he said.
