Several Feared Dead After Car Plunges Into Ditch on Embu-Meru Highway

Several people are feared dead after a Toyota Sienta carrying mourners crashed along the Embu-Meru Highway in Kaura Mijii on Thursday morning.

The vehicle was travelling from Chuka towards Chogoria when it reportedly lost control, left the highway and plunged into a ditch between Giampampo Stage and Mitheru.

The force of the crash left the vehicle extensively wrecked. Images from the scene showed parts of the car, including wheels and the engine, scattered several metres from the main wreckage.

The passengers were reportedly travelling from Ngara in Nairobi to Tigania, Meru County, for the burial of a business associate.

The number of people killed or injured had not been officially confirmed by the time of publication. Rescue efforts were under way, with motorists and residents joining the response at the crash site.

Police were expected to establish what caused the driver to lose control. Until the investigation is completed, accounts of speeding or other possible causes remain unconfirmed.

Crash raises fresh concerns over busy Embu-Meru route

The latest crash adds to wider concerns about road safety in the region, where busy highways have recorded repeated fatal incidents.

Earlier this year, residents along the Mwea-Embu route raised concerns over a series of crashes and called for stronger traffic controls and road-safety measures. Citizen Digital reported in April that at least five people had died in separate crashes along the highway within a week.

A separate crash at Murubara in July left two people dead and another seriously injured after two private cars collided head-on. Witnesses told NTV Kenya that the vehicles appeared to have been travelling at high speed before the collision.

The incidents have renewed calls for motorists to observe speed limits and for authorities to address sections considered dangerous by residents.

In July, residents at Murubara described the area as a black spot and called for additional safety measures after another fatal collision.

What remains unclear

For Thursday's crash, key details remain outstanding.

Authorities had not yet confirmed the number of passengers inside the Sienta, the number of casualties or whether anyone was trapped in the wreckage.

The condition of any survivors was also not immediately established.

Police investigations will be important in determining whether speed, mechanical failure, road conditions or another factor contributed to the crash.

As rescue and recovery operations continued, traffic on the affected section was disrupted as motorists stopped at the scene.

For families travelling to funerals and other events along the busy route, the crash is another reminder of how quickly an ordinary journey can turn tragic.
