By-Elections Underway in 22 Areas as Kenya Heads to Polls

Voters across 22 electoral areas opened the ballot boxes on Thursday, with the first votes of the day cast under a tight security blanket. The nationwide by-elections, managed by the IEBC, include contests for several parliamentary seats, one Senate seat and multiple county assembly wards.

What’s at stake

The by-elections cover six National Assembly constituencies, one Senate seat and a number of county assembly wards.

Additionally, two wards — Tembelio Ward (Uasin Gishu) and Metkei Ward (Elgeyo Marakwet) — were not contested, after only ruling-party candidates were validly nominated. That meant an early win for the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in those two seats.

Preparations and security

In the days leading up to the vote, IEBC officials distributed ballot papers and other election materials nationwide and completed training of presiding officers locally.

The government responded with heavy security deployment. Kipchumba Murkomen, the Interior Minister, asked Kenyans to vote peacefully and warned that security forces would act firmly against any disruption.

Early mood at the polling stations

As polling began from 6:00 a.m., early reports pointed to a calm and orderly start in many areas. Officials say polling materials arrived on time and polling stations were properly staffed.

Still, observers forecast lower turnout compared with a general election — a common trend in by-elections.

Risks and warnings

Though the mood has generally been peaceful so far, some worry about voter apathy and possible misinformation — especially after a fake notice once circulated claiming results in uncontested wards. The IEBC had to issue clarifications urging the public to ignore unverified claims. The coming hours will be key. With so many seats at stake, and clear memories of previous electoral tensions, the eyes of the country remain fixed on the ballot boxes.
