Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has called upon the National Intelligence Service (NIS) to investigate and take action against Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) allegedly funding the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests.

Speaking at a church service on Sunday, Senator Cherargei claimed that the ongoing protests, primarily led by Gen Z, were being financially supported by NGOs. He urged the NIS to intervene and stop these organizations from funding the demonstrations.

"We have discovered that some NGOs are sending money to this young generation to conduct the protests. I want the NIS to close down these channels that the NGOs are using to destabilize the government," he stated.

Cherargei emphasized that the government intends to engage with young Kenyans to find a constructive path forward regarding the bill. He highlighted the government's commitment to considering ideas that benefit all Kenyans.

In recent times, government supporters have raised concerns about the sources of funding for the ongoing protests, which have disrupted daily activities and led to injuries and loss of lives. On Saturday, government spokesperson Isaac Mwaura suggested that foreign entities were financing the protests due to President William Ruto's stance on the Russia-Ukraine war and his efforts to reduce reliance on the US dollar for international trade.

"Our president has spoken on many international issues. He has advocated for climate change action and united Africa, which may have displeased some people," Mwaura added.

Since the protests began last week, some Kenyans have shown support for the demonstrators. Videos circulating online show groups of medics and lawyers providing free services to protesters. Additionally, some citizens have been distributing water, food, and other essential items, while fundraisers have been organized to address emergencies arising from the protests.

Demonstrations are expected to continue throughout the week, with protesters demanding that the Finance Bill 2024 be entirely withdrawn.
