Following a prolonged closure due to devastating floods, the government has declared the imminent reopening of all schools.

State House officials confirmed that schools will resume operations on Monday, May 13, 2024, as announced by President William Ruto during a closed-door meeting with leaders from Laikipia and Kajiado.

"Schools to re-open on Monday 13th May 2024," Secretary of State Functions, Mike Gitonga quoted President Ruto.

This decision comes after careful consideration of advisories from the Kenya Meteorological Department, indicating a projected reduction in rainfall intensity starting this week.

In preparation for the reopening, government agencies will collaborate with the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) to expedite the reconstruction of damaged school infrastructure.

Additionally, the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) has been actively involved in nationwide flood mitigation efforts.

Initially scheduled for Monday, April 29, the reopening was postponed by Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu due to safety concerns arising from heavy rains.

President Ruto further delayed the reopening, acknowledging the worsening rain situation.

"The Ministry of Education is directed to postpone the dates of reopening of all schools in the country for the second term until further notice," Ruto announced during a national address on Friday, May 3.
