Kenyatta University Mourns Loss of Students in Tragic Road Accident

The Kenyatta University community is reeling from the aftermath of a devastating road accident involving a university bus transporting students on an academic excursion to Mombasa. The tragic incident occurred on Monday, March 18, in Maungu, Taita Taveta County, where the university bus collided with a tractor-trailer, resulting in a heartbreaking loss of lives.

Initial reports indicate that a number of students were fatally injured in the accident, plunging the university into profound grief and sorrow. In response to this tragic event, Kenyatta University swiftly activated a response team comprising personnel from both the main and Mombasa campuses to the scene of the accident. Their primary objectives were to assess the situation, provide immediate assistance to survivors, and gather accurate information regarding the incident.

A statement released by the university expressed the concerted efforts of the response team, consisting of medical professionals, university security officers, and student and staff welfare officers, in extending crucial aid to the injured. Some students are currently under assessment for possible evacuation to Nairobi, depending on the severity of their injuries.

"While we are unable to disclose specific numbers or names at this time, it is with heavy hearts that we confirm the involvement of several fatalities in this tragic event," the statement conveyed.

Kenyatta University assured that a comprehensive update will be disseminated as more information becomes available, ensuring transparency and clarity amidst the unfolding situation.

Prof. Paul K. Wainaina, Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University, conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the University Council and Management Board to the bereaved families, expressing solidarity and support during this difficult time.
