In a significant move towards cultural revitalization, Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba has announced the temporary closure of the Kenya National Theatre (KNT) for an extensive six-month renovation period. The closure is part of a broader initiative to enhance and modernize the facility, aligning with the Ministry of Sport's commitment to fostering talent development and monetization.
Description:
The Kenya National Theatre, a prominent cultural hub, will remain closed until April 2024 as it undergoes a transformation facilitated by a Ksh 167 Million renovation tender awarded by the Ministry of Sport. Michael Pundo, KNT's Chief Executive Officer, advised enthusiasts to explore alternative venues such as Cheche Gallery, Ukumbi Mdogo, and Wasanii Corner for training and performances during this temporary closure.
Sports CS Ababu Namwamba, who spearheaded the renovation initiative, personally oversaw the handover of the contract to the winning bidder on Wednesday, November 15. As part of the comprehensive overhaul, CS Ababu appointed a new board comprising 12 members to oversee the theatre's operations for the next two years.
Addressing the newly appointed board members during the letter presentation ceremony, CS Ababu emphasized that the renovations were crucial to elevating the facility's standards. The upgraded Kenya National Theatre aims to play a pivotal role in the ministry's mission to identify, nurture, and commercialize talents across various artistic domains.
"The renovation will see the theatre transformed into a modern facility that supports multiple talent development and nurturing," stated a release by KNT, highlighting the anticipated positive impact on the artistic community.
This closure follows another recent development under CS Ababu's leadership, as the Iten Sports Grounds underwent renovations on November 14, 2023, to provide an upgraded platform for regional sports development. Additionally, CS Ababu pledged redesign and elevation plans for Kamariny Stadium in Elgeyo Marakwet.
In line with his commitment to sports infrastructure development, CS Ababu has commissioned renovations for four major stadiums—Kasarani, Nyayo, Kipchoge Keino, and Talanta sports stadiums—ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). These initiatives underscore the government's dedication to fostering a robust sporting and cultural landscape in Kenya.
