The escalating tariff dispute between Canada and the United States has highlighted the asymmetry of their trading relationship – the US outsources more to Canada than vice‑versa – yet experts say the balance of power may be less one‑sided than it appears.
BBC journalist Jessica Murphy points out that Canada is the leading export destination for 26 US states, including Maine, Michigan and Wisconsin, and sits within the top three markets for 45 of the 50 states, suggesting a broad base of dependence across the American heartland.
These figures, Murphy argues, give Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney – as referenced by the broadcast – considerable room to manoeuvre in any retaliatory measures, meaning Canada should not be written off in the spiralling trade fight.
