A social media storm has erupted after YouTuber Cukura ya Nairobi claimed he was slapped by creator and event organiser Wanja Nyarari during the burial of gospel singer Betty Bayo. The funeral, held on Thursday in Mugumo Estate, Kiambu County, drew intense public attention and heavy security.

Cukura took to social media early on Friday, alleging that Wanja attacked him without provocation. In a sharply worded post, he accused her of acting out of “pure attitude,” saying, “You decided to slap me for absolutely nothing. If I had done anything wrong, real authority was right there.”

The accusation spread quickly online, prompting Wanja to issue her own account of the incident later in the day.

“A mission to protect the family”

Wanja said she had been appointed to lead a structured security operation during the funeral, with the primary goal of shielding the bereaved family from intrusion and ensuring that the service was conducted in dignity and privacy.

She explained that the assignment came directly from Sky Victor, the late singer’s daughter, with approval from Betty Bayo’s husband, Tash.

“Meet Sky Victor 254, the youngest commanding officer I’ve ever served under,” she wrote. “The command came unexpectedly… clear, firm and mission-focused.” She added that her role involved supporting Sky and her brother “emotionally and physically” throughout the burial.

According to Wanja, the security team faced three attempted disruptions during the funeral. She said each was identified and contained before it could escalate.

“I assured my youngest commander, SKY, that execution will be… no matter what,” she wrote. “There were three attempted breaches. Detected, intercepted, contained.”

She said that at the end of the ceremony, Sky personally thanked her, telling her: “Thank you for protecting my mum’s dignity on her resting day.”

A tightly controlled farewell

The burial of Betty Bayo, a well-known gospel singer with a large following, drew crowds and widespread social media attention. Family members had expressed concerns that the event could be disrupted or turned into a spectacle, prompting them to tighten access and closely manage movement around the gravesite.

Wanja said the strict measures were not intended to silence anyone, but to allow the family space to mourn. She also thanked several members of the late singer’s inner circle, saying they appreciated the disciplined approach taken by the security team.

Cukura has not indicated whether he intends to file a formal complaint. Neither Kiambu police nor the family has commented publicly on whether the matter will be followed up.

For now, the row continues to unfold online, where supporters of both personalities have weighed in, turning what began as a private farewell into a national talking point.
