The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has confirmed it is investigating Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya over the alleged embezzlement of Ksh1.4 billion in county funds, following a dramatic raid at his residence on Monday morning.
According to the Commission, the operation — which also targeted four other individuals — is linked to irregular procurement and fictitious payments made by the Trans Nzoia County Government during the 2022/2023 and 2024/2025 financial years.

The rehabilitation and modernization of Kenyatta Stadium (Phase 1A)

The construction of Trans Nzoia County headquarters

The construction of Tom Mboya Hospital
EACC alleges that Governor Natembeya played a central role in influencing tender awards and received kickbacks through proxies. Among those under investigation are the Chief Officers of Finance and Water, the Director of Procurement, and a contractor allegedly acting as a proxy for the governor.
“The Commission is also pursuing allegations of money laundering and the accumulation of unexplained wealth by senior county officials, suspected of masking proceeds of corruption,” EACC said in a statement.
Tensions escalated outside Natembeya’s residence in Kitale as supporters clashed with law enforcement, forcing police to call for reinforcements to manage the situation. The standoff led to the vandalism of five vehicles belonging to EACC investigators.
Condemning the chaos, the Commission warned that those who obstructed the raid could face legal action. “Obstructing a Commission Officer in the line of duty is a criminal offence punishable by law,” EACC stated.
The agency also dismissed claims that the investigation is politically driven, reiterating its status as an independent constitutional body acting within its legal framework.
“This act of hooliganism is unacceptable and a direct affront to the rule of law. The Commission will continue to discharge its mandate with professionalism and integrity,” the statement read.
The probe has reignited debate around graft and governance in county governments, as pressure mounts on public officials to uphold transparency and accountability.
