A private clinician in Migori County displayed immense bravery on Thursday, July 20, as he put his life on the line to protect two children outside his residence when police engaged protestors in running battles during the anti-government protests staged by the Azimio coalition.

The courageous act saved the two kids from harm but came at a high price for the clinician.

Speaking to journalists at the Migori County Referral Hospital, the 35-year-old clinician recounted the incident, saying he was going about his routine duties when he saw a police officer draw his gun. At that moment, he was holding his daughter's hand with his right hand and his neighbor's daughter with his left hand. Concerned about the unfolding events, he instinctively pulled the two children close and shielded them beneath him.

A few moments later, the clinician felt an impact on his chest and noticed blood oozing from the wound. The incident left a bullet lodged inside his body, as confirmed by Nick Ndoro, a nursing officer at the Migori Referral Hospital.

“He is still in the ward undergoing further medical treatment," said Nick Ndoro.

The incident occurred during the second day of the ongoing nationwide demonstrations. The Migori County Referral Hospital reported 12 injury cases on the second day of protests, five of which were gunshot wounds.

In neighboring counties of Busia and Kisumu, demonstrations were less intense compared to Wednesday.

Despite the protests being less charged on Thursday, traders across Nyanza expressed their displeasure with the impact the demonstrations were having on businesses. They lamented incurring significant losses and called for the president and opposition leader to find a solution to the situation.

Meanwhile, Acting Kisumu Commander, Hussein Alasow, urged Kisumu residents to resume their work, assuring them of adequate security. He also called on parents to allow their children to return to school, as the government rescinded its decision to shut down schools in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu due to fears of violence.

The heroic act of the clinician highlights the risks and challenges faced by civilians caught in the midst of such protests and the urgent need for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing unrest.
