Two prominent Kenyan politicians have vowed to assist traders who lost their property in a recent inferno at Toi Market in Kibera.

Langata MP Felix Odiwour alias Jalang'o, who is also a comedian, said he will be in Kibra on Tuesday, June 13, to start rebuilding the stalls that were destroyed by the fire.

"My heart and prayers go out to our people at Toi Market Kibera! I will be there with you tomorrow as we start the building of our stores," Jalang'o said in a statement on Monday.

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, who toured the market on Monday, also pledged to assist the traders rebuild their stalls and lives.

Sakaja said his administration would donate iron sheets and food to the traders, and would also rebuild the market to make it more fire-resistant.

"These traders have been able to make a living and feed their families by running small businesses in Toi market. Meanwhile, we have organised food and material support," Sakaja said.

The governor said his administration would also investigate the cause of the fire and come up with long-term solutions to prevent future fires.

The fire at Toi Market broke out on Sunday morning and destroyed over 1,000 stalls. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

The traders who lost their property in the fire have expressed their gratitude to Jalang'o and Sakaja for their support.

"We are very grateful to Jalang'o and Sakaja for coming to our aid. We know that we will be able to rebuild our lives with their help," said one of the traders.

The fire at Toi Market is a reminder of the vulnerability of informal traders to fire and other disasters. It is important for the government to put in place measures to protect informal traders and their livelihoods.
