President William Ruto on Friday, March 3, extended the term of the former Chief Justice David Maraga - led Police Reforms Taskforce for two months.
While speaking in Gilgil during the pass-out parade of the National Youth Service (NYS) officers, Ruto stated that the extension was aimed at giving the team enough time to also review the terms of service for NYS officers.
He explained that the move was necessary given the noble role NYS officers play across the country.
Just like other security agencies, the Maraga-led team was tasked with reviewing the salaries and terms of service of the officers.
"This morning, I have instructed an extension of two months to be accorded to the taskforce so that they can also include the National Youth Service (NYS) to ensure that they join the other services in the review
"This will ensure that they are included in the term of service. I look forward to that report," announced the Head of State.
He also underlined that his administration was keen on improving the living conditions of security agencies.
Initially, the Maraga-led taskforce was tasked with reviewing the terms of service for officers under the National Police Service (NPS) and the prison wardens.
The former Chief Justice was among 20 individuals that were appointed on December 22, 2022, to review the terms of service for officers and make recommendations on the same.
Maraga's team was to finalise their report by the end of March 2023 having been tasked to complete the mandate in 90 days.
"The term of the task force is a period of 90 days with the effect from the date of this notice. The Secretariat of the task force shall be at the Ministry of Interior and National administration," read the notice in part then.
With the extension, the term of the Maraga-led taskforce will end in May 2023.
