A Kenyan woman identified as Esther Wairimu, who had been stuck in Lebanon, was rescued by the Kenyan government on January 3.
The lady who worked as a domestic worker in the Arabic country had made a public distress call to the government through a viral YouTube video shared by Voo Television.
After seeing her video, Principal Secretary, of the State Department for Diaspora Affairs Roseline Njogu asked her to send her details to the state department’s Twitter account.
“Esther Wairimu has been rescued today by Kenyan Consulate in Lebanon.
“Through the intervention of the ambassador, Wairimu has also been given a flight ticket to Kenya,” a statement from Voo Television read in part.
Wairimu alleged that she was being mistreated and abused by her employer.
“I am asking the government or anyone of goodwill to save me. I have been abused to the extent that I have to use towels to hide injuries,” she pleaded through a video.
The victm also claimed that she had approached the consulate before making the YouTube video.
“I first approached the consulate but they did not help, I was asked to provide proof of the abuse before any intervention could be made,” she stated.
Her rescue came a week after PS Njogu urged Kenyans in the Middle East to use Twitter if in need of government intervention.
“We are working to resolve challenges with domestic workers in the Middle East.
“If you are a distressed Kenyan in the region or your family member is, reach out to our embassies or the diaspora state department through official Twitter channels,” she announced on December 29, 2022.
